Exceptional students have a powerful brain and are quick to absorb new information. You can boost your brain power in many ways, from playing memory games and studying to exercising and eating the right foods.

Eating Smart to Be Smarter

If your goal is to be a better learner and a better student, you need to do more than studying harder, taking great notes, and asking questions in class. You need to change your eating habits as well. Junk food, although delicious, can hinder your learning experience. It can make you feel tired, sleepy, and make it harder for you to grasp new concepts. Instead, you should try to include more of the following tasty brain foods into your regular diet.

5 Brain Foods for Better Learning

  1. Salmon: People who eat lots of fatty acids like the ones found in salmon have sharper minds, find it easier to concentrate, and are also better at mental skills tests. Ask for a salmon roll next time you go for sushi.
  2. Dark chocolate: If you need some extra sugar to get you through your study session, eat a bite of dark chocolate. Chocolate boosts your mood, increases blood flow to the brain, and improves your thinking.
  3. Nuts: Nuts fend off degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and support overall brain health. Nuts are an excellent source of vitamin E, which protects nerve membranes; thiamin that protects the brain and nervous system; and melatonin. Eat a bunch of nuts as a healthy snack, or give nut butter a try. If you’re allergic to nuts, seeds work just as well.
  4. Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and blackberries pack tons of antioxidants and flavonoids, which help boost your memory and improve your learning and thinking. Go for darker berries which have higher nutritional value.
  5. Avocado: As if you need another excuse to jump on the avocado toast wagon. Avocados protect and strengthen the nerve cells that carry information in the brain and improve brain flow as well.
