If you’re planning on going to college you’re already aware that most schools require you to take a standardized test. You have two options: the SAT and the ACT.

The Right Test Can Get You Into Your Dream School

So, you want to go to college and decided to take a standardized test. Now your next task is to decide which exam are you going to take, the SAT or the ACT. First you need to understand how the exams differ so you can decide which exam best suits your abilities and raises your possibilities of getting into your dream school. Keep on reading to learn about the main differences between the SAT and ACT.
  1. Contents: The SAT is divided into four sections: Math, Reading, Writing and Language, and an optional essay. The ACT has five sections: English, Math, Reading, Science, and an optional essay.
  2. Time: It takes about the same time to complete each test, although the ACT has more questions than the SAT. You get around two hours and 55 minutes to complete the ACT, plus 35 minutes more if you choose to write the essay. As for the SAT, you get three hours plus 50 extra minutes if you complete the essay.
  3. Essay: The essay is optional on both tests, but it’s highly recommended that you complete it. The SAT’s essay focuses on reading comprehension. You need to prove that you understood the source text. On the other hand, the ACT’s essay requires that you use your critical thinking skills to evaluate and analyze an issue.
  4. Math skills: How good are your mental math skills right now? If you need a calculator to do math, you’re better off taking the ACT. If you can live without a calculator, take the SAT.
  5. Science: You will not be tested on your scientific knowledge on the ACT, but on your ability to think critically and analyze data. You don’t need to worry about that if you plan on taking the SAT.
  6. Location: There are different test centers all over the country, but it’s possible that there’s not one in your town. You need to consider if you’re willing to travel and stay over night for the test you choose.
