How you express yourself and how you understand others is deeply influenced by your mastery over the English vocabulary. To learn how you can improve yours, read the following post.

How to Build on Your Vocabulary

  1. To learn new words, you first need to find new words. The best way to do this is to become an avid reader. The more reading material you have (and the wider its subject matter), the more unknown words you will encounter.
  2. While having a list of newly found words is fun and all, it won't do you much good unless you know what those words mean. For that reason, you should use a dictionary to search and learn their definition, so you can include them in your regular vernacular.
  3. Once again, simply knowing new words, won't be of much use. You need to put them to good use to guarantee that they will stick. A way to do this is to write often.
  4. Talking to people can also help you in your journey to widen up your vocabulary. As you have conversations, listen for any unknown words. Also, take this as an opportunity to practice your new vocabulary.
  5. Last but not least, you can make extending your vocabulary fun. Play some games to that end. For example, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and other apps can make learning new vocabulary entertaining.
