Outlining can make writing a quality paper that much easier, since it allows you to visualize how it will turn out before you actually write it out. To create a good outline, follow the tips below.

How to Create an Outline

  1. You can't create an outline, let alone write a paper, if you don't know the topic you'll be going over. For that reason, you should research the topic thoroughly. Gather as much relevant information as you can on it. Just know to look for that information in trustworthy sources.
  2. As you're researching the topic, it's recommended that you start taking notes of what you find and where you find it. Doing so will help you have that information handy, so you can go back to it when you're making the outline and writing.
  3. For your paper to be well put-together and make sense, it needs a main idea. Establish it early on so you can give your report direction.
  4. Any main idea requires secondary ideas to support it and provide more details on the topic. To obtain those backing statements, you should have a brainstorming session and start writing out the ideas that come to you. Of course, use the information you researched to ensure your paper is well-rounded and versed.
  5. Finally, you have your main and secondary ideas all written out. Now, you need to work on the outline. To that end, you can edit your ideas, add more, cut some of them out, arrange them differently, until you end up with a flow of ideas that makes sense and works in an organic way. All you'll have to do after that is fill in the blanks to finish your paper.
